Pageant Rules I. REGISTRATIONA. The counselors of all competing youth must mail registration forms and specified information for each contestant to the Pageant committee. There will be no late registrations for the pageant. No Exceptions! The counselors will do all registering, and NO youth will be allowed to compete if not assigned a counselor.B. Contestant should be active in youth group activities at their home congregations or give evidence of being involved before coming to the conference. The spiritual leadership of the youth’s congregation (minister or elder) has the final decision as to whether or not a youth may represent that congregation at the state conference and national function. C. Required items that must be included with the registration for each contestant: NO EXCEPTIONS! 1. Three letters of recommendation from the community (school counselor, school principal, church leaders, minister, teachers, etc.) 2. A 5x7 photo 3. A copy of the contestant’s speech 4. A brief description of the contestant’s talent 5. A brief description of prop to be used (if any) D. One female and one male from any city in Tennessee may compete in each division. In cities where there are multiple congregations, these congregations should devise a means to select which one will represent that city. II. QUALIFICATIONS A. Contestants must be 13-20 years old. B. Married youths and/or unwed mothers and fathers are NOT ELIGIBLE to compete. C. Contestants must be faithful members of the Church of Christ. D. Contestant’s speech must be on the conference theme. E. Talent must emphasize a spiritual message. F. Failing to timely register will lead to contestant’s disqualification. III. DRESS A. A casual dress outfit can be worn for the opening production. There will be time to change into a special outfit after the opening production. B. A special outfit can be worn for the talent competition or performance. Youth should be dressed in the special outfit when time to go on stage. There will be time to change into formal attire after the performance. Judges should be notified when costumes or special attire are part of the performance. C. Formal wear can be worn throughout the performance, if desired. Dress will be semi-formal or formal during final presentations and announcement of the winners. Contestants should be dressed in formal wear to accept awards. D. No outfits should be extreme, lewd, or offensive, such as tight fitting or revealing clothing. Members of the Pageant Committee and/or the Steering Committee will determine such limits. IV. DIVISIONS A. There are two pageant divisions:
B. Reign of Winners 1. Division A winners will reign for a period of one year. Those who do not win in this division may compete again (in this division only) until contestant wins or exceeds the age limit. 2. Division B winners will reign for a period of one year. Youth may then compete for Division A titles upon reaching qualifying age. Those who do not win in this division may compete again (in this division only) until contestant wins or exceeds the age limit, at which time the youth advances to Division A.
V. INTRODUCTION OF COMPETING YOUTH A. Counselors must mail completed registration forms and other requested documents to the Pageant Committee by March 1. All information must be legible to ensure a proper introduction when formally introduced by the moderator. B. During the opening production, each youth will introduce him/herself by giving his/her name, age, division classification, school, congregation, and city he or she is representing. This is the only time when the city being represented is named. C. During the competition, each youth will extend his/her greeting (without stating city) and then formally start his/her performance. The youth should notify the judges if the talent is to be performed first. If the speech is to be given first, the youth should say, “And now for my talent, I would like to….” at the completion of the speech before starting the talent performance. VI. JUDGING A. There will be five judges. The pageant committee will ensure that no judge is selected from any congregation where a contestant attends. B. Judges will decide winners by marking points on the score sheet for individual contestants. Scores will be computed after all judging elements have been performed by all contestants. After computation of all scores, the winners’ names will be placed in a sealed envelope, to be announced during the program finale. C. Each contestant will be judged on the following: 1. Personal appearance 2. Speech: content, delivery, and spiritual message 3. Poise and personality 4. Talent: must include a spiritual message (must not depict any form of violence or death) 5. Three letters of recommendation (judged by the Pageant Committee) D. A Point System will be used in which a contestant can receive 1-5 points in each category:
A maximum of 30 total points may be obtained. In the event of a tie, judges will render the tie-breaking decision. Each finalist will be called to reappear before the audience and judges. A relatively easy question on current affairs will be asked to each finalist. The contestant will have one minute to talk on the subject. E. Winners from the previous year can be active in presenting the awards to the current year’s winners and turn the reign over to them. VII. CONTESTANTS’ PERFORMANCE A. Contestants MUST compete by presenting a SPEECH ON THE CONFERENCE THEME AND A TALENT. Talent can be: music, dramatic reading, compositions, artistic presentations, or orations. Each contestant will be allowed six minutes to present his or her talent and speech and will be penalized points for exceeding the time limit. One point per minute will be deducted from the contestant's overall score for each minute exceeding the allowed time limit. Note: Each second will count for overtime. B. Contestants should perform as much of the individual performance as possible. Other individuals shall not accompany the contestants in performance or have an active part to lend additional performance credit to the contestant. Only one person is competing as an individual, not as a group, partners, etc. C. A description of props to be used shall be submitted by March 1. A taped voice recording or recorded music may be used in moderation. Props should be kept to a minimum, if at all. Human props are not to have speaking parts in the presentation. Youth are not to decorate the stage with props in an attempt to impress the audience and judges. If props are used in performance, only one minute will be allowed to set up and one minute to remove props. Removal must be done smoothly and quietly. Contestants exceeding the one-minute limit to set up or remove props will be deducted one point from their overall score for every 30 seconds of overtime. No exceptions will be made unless otherwise deemed by the Pageant Director or representative.
Failing to timely register could lead to disqualification and not being able to compete at the State Conference. All documents and registration forms must be postmarked by March 1 and becomes the property of the Tennessee State Youth Conference. NO EXCEPTIONS. ANY DISCREPANCIES, DISPUTES OR PROBLEMS THAT MAY ARISE WILL BE RESOLVED IN CONSULTATION WITH THE JUDGES, STEERING COMMITTEE, PAGEANT COMMITTEE, AND PAGEANT DIRECTOR. THEIR DECISIONS ARE FINAL. No materials will be accepted on-site during the conference.
